Notes

This is my second time making this lovely scarf designed by Jennifer Weissman. This time I’m making it much wider. You can use any yarn and gauge for this pattern. And it’s a reversible scarf so both sides look identical.

Jennifer Weisman’s patterns are the best I’ve seen with regard to clarity, layout and correctness. There are so many ways that this scarf/shawl can be worn as I’ve tried to show in my photos. I also like it tied around the hips over a long skirt. So versatile! The ends remind me of a giant leaves with veining due to the tapered shape and stitch pattern.

By varying the yarn, needle size and number of horizoal and vertical repeats, this scarf can look entirely different as you can see by my first version here. You’d hardly know that I used the exact same pattern to create both scarves.

The yarn I ued for this one is tweedy, nubby and varies in thickness from lace weight up to sport weight in places. But overall, it’s a fingering weight. I used the needle size suggested in the pattern so that I could achieve a very light weight, drapey scarf. It’s not quite lacy looking, but almost. I did 30 repeats of rows 1 - 11 in the blue box at the bottom of page 5. This resulted in a scarf 80 inches long.

Knitting with yarn from a cone can be tricky unless you take the time to divide it up into smaller portions. However, I made a video showing how I knit with yarn from a large cone.

Weight of finished shawl: 6.8 oz (192.8 grams)

Incidentally, I made this dress about 30 years ago. I’ve been sewing my own clothing since age 12. Clothes we make ourselves never seem to wear out. Of course, the amount of sewing that I do has something to do with this fact.
