A colleague requested a wig he could wear for the Relay for Life--request (shall be) granted!
Right! So. One thing I only realised after casting off (the first time) is that this pattern tends to make a “wig” with points at the top. I did not think that looked particularly wig-like (for anyone other than an animated or video game character, that is), so I made some modifications.
Sadly, Rose does not make a good model.for this hat, as she is a puppy and has a smaller head. That said, at least she didn’t run away like my cats did. xx
Note: my mods have (so far) not resulted in a pointy wig, but YMMV. Also, this is knit from the top-down, in one piece. Also, I decreased the total number of stitches because the first one I tried was kinda … huge. As well as pinty. ^^’
Should I make this again, I would end the bang/back increases at 28/or even 24--I’m pretty sure the upcurl at the end has something to do witb tbe stretch of the fabric over the head and the gathering of the ribbing at the neck. Also, would make it a little longer--I didn’t want to break into the second ball of yarn for so small a section. ^^’
Mods:
- using Judy’s Magic Toe-Up cast-on, cast on 42 stitches (21 on each needles, if you’re using ciruclars)
- Row 1 - k1 p1 (k2 p1 to last st) k1
- row 2 (initial increase) - k1 pfb (k2 pfb to last st) k1 (56 st)
- row 3 (st markers) - m1 plmrkr k1 p2 (k2 p2 6 times) k1 plmkr m1 (2nd needle) m1 plmrkr k1 p2 (k2 p2 6 times) k1 plmkr m1
- Note: where you are increasing between the stitch markers is where the bangs and the back of the head will be. Arrange the bang/back stitches so the first two are knits--as more stitches are added (rows 4 to whenever there are 32 in the bangs/back sections), knit them in 2x2 ribbing
- row 4-8 - inc 4 st per row, between the bangs/back markers. Yes, increase every row
- row 9 to whenever the bangs/back sections have 32 st each - increase by 4 st very second row at the markers, keeping in 2x2 ribbing
- continue knitting until the “bangs” are long enough (I guesstimated ^^“)
- cast off 32 stitches in the bangs section.
- continue knitting flat in 2x2 ribbing unitl the “hair” is the length you’re looking for
- Cast off. Wear with pride.
