9.24.2011: Finished! Loved this pattern, despite the work involved. They fit perfectly. In addition to omitting the very bottom line of text and adding a few plain stockinette rows at the top and bottom, I also changed the chart for the left hand very slightly. I removed the rhombus shine mark from the clock, and I also extended the labyrinth so that the branches abutted the sides of the clock, rather than creating a sort of frame around the clock itself as in the original pattern.
Sadly, I only learned about yarn dominance in colorwork when about halfway through the second mitt. I think that you can tell a bit that the top part of the labyrinth is clearer than the bottom part, but it doesn’t worry me that much. The only thing I may still go back and fix is that on the palm side of the right hand, there is one stair where there seems to be a “stair tread” line of white stitches missing. I may go back and duplicate stitch to fix this.
9.12.2011: Having done the right mitt first, I am finding that the left mitt is much trickier, only because the Fair Isle design is more complicated. I am spending much more time looking at the pattern for each stitch and counting and recounting stitches. This makes for difficult TV knitting, so these have taken a backseat to a copule other projects. Luckily, I am very pleased with how the first mitt turned out, so I can keep looking at it for inspiration when the going is slow. Slow progress aside, I’m really liking how the pattern is turning out.
9.6.2011: Frogged and restarted with Knitpicks Stroll Fingering Bare. Finished first mitt and am now partway into the second. I made a few mods to the mitt: I omitted the very bottom line of text, and to make up for that a bit, I made the ribbing longer and added a couple of extra rows of plain stockinette below and above the (second) line of text.
7.11.2011: Hm. While I thought the Pearlescent and Tea Party colorways would look great together, and they do, the darker areas of Pearlescent look almost close to the lighter areas of Tea Party, so I worry that the design isn’t standing out as clearly as it could. I’ve set this project aside for a few days to decide whether I really want to rip all the way back or not. It’s knitting up a bit bigger than I’d like, even though my gauge is on-target, so if I rip back, I might try again in a smaller needle.
