Umaro by Jared Flood appears to be using pattern 108 created by Hitomi Shida from her book 250 Japanese Knitting Stitches, first published in 1996. I have another Hitomi Shida book (Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible) with a very similar pattern that I’ve slightly modified. Umaro is a popular make on Ravelry and it’s where I became aware of the pattern first. So although I haven’t purchased the pattern from Brooklyn Tweed I’ve added the link to the Umaro pattern to my project along with the link to Hitomi Shida’s original design.
I’m using the pattern repeat to make a christening blanket for my nephew Bill.
As I love a tassel I’ve added one to each of the 4 corners.
My workings:
Cast on 127 sts.
5mm needles.
Aran weight wool blend yarn.
9 sts moss stitch each side (18 sts).
12 rows moss stitch at each end of blanket.
9 pattern repeats across the row plus extra stitch (108 sts + 1 st).
Knitted for 7 repeats of the pattern (pattern 28 rows per repeat)
Finished size:
Length - 90cm
Width - 74 cm
Weight - 386g
Note:
Moss stitch in the UK is generally a 2 row repeat, known commonly as seed stitch in the US.
