Notes

A beautiful design.
Over 2,000 people have made this design.
They can’t all be wrong!

My Deschain #1.
This is Finished Deschain # 1,541. give or take.

Fits perfectly and looks amazing on said daughter.
She wears it with front tucked in and sleeves rolled up a couple inches.
Very proud of this one.
(Sorry my mannequin picture isn’t that great.)

Elected to make with smaller gauge and less ease.
Worked to ~ 20” length, allowing for shrinking to 18” upon machine wash / tumble dry. Swatch shrank very slightly widthwise and shrank 1/2” per 6” lengthwise.

Several people have made this design with this sport wt yarn very successfully.

I rarely join yarn with a knot but on occasion, it is the best method. For stiffer yarns or looser gauge stitches, weaving in ends are more visible or loosen over time.

For the yarn in my project, one skein lasted for almost all of each main piece. Worked seven motif groups for more length.

Back, top down, with short rows
Working the rectangle in st st as directed.
Keep track of rows in groups of 14 rows per group.
That’s how many rows in the Shale panel.
Work 2 Japanese short rows in groups 1 - 4.

At row 7 of each group, work short row set 5 st outside the 29 center stitches).
This enables the piece to drape properly in balance with the front, whose middle lace section drapes down.

Work even for remaining rows before working hem finish.

another Back, top down option
Work the shale motif for one or two repeats, which will create a nice back neckline.
Work the remaining rows in st st.
This way, the back will not have the somewhat sheer open lace.
Work desired sets of short rows in remaining 14 r groups.

Back section, with short rows, bottom up
Worked hem finish first.
Worked back piece in st st, keeping track of rows in groups of 14 rows each.
Worked groups 1 - 3 in st st.
Worked 2 Japanese short rows at r 7 of groups 4 - 7.

(Simultaneously, elected to work gentle neck / shoulder shaping at last 4 rows.)

Japanese short rows are the easiest for me and they are essentially invisible.

Sleeves
Bracelet length.
CO 40.
Worked the sleeves bottom up with hem design from the main pieces at the sleeve hems.
Increased 2 st every 7 rows to 60 st.
Worked 6 more rows.
Worked a slightly shaped sleeve cap, with a rise of 3”.
Stitched sleeves to main section and stitched side seams and sleeve seams in one continuous manner.

Another Sleeve option:
Make the sleeves (bottom up) with the shale motif centered. There’s plenty of stitches to do that. It naturally creates a gentle sleeve cap. See: Esther’s Mochaccino Deschain.
