Notes

This was knit with a knitting belt.

I hope that this chemo hat will be just right for the recipient for summer. It is

  • very lightweight (it only weighs 41 grams)
  • very soft (the fibre mix is merino/silk)
  • not too warm I hope, due to the silk
  • has only knit stitches on the inside, similar to “princess soles” in socks, so should be as less irritating for the sensitive skin of the scalp as possible
  • slouchy, so that it still provides some volume for the head (so that it might look as though no hair is missing for unaware viewers), plus it leaves a lot of room for the scalp, to irritate it less
  • has no holes in its pattern, so that no blank scalp shows through

I only hope that the yarn will not wear out and become sloppy on the ribbing. It seems to have a tendency to do that.

I went for the 240 sts (20 in) version for a 56 cm head circumference. I should have made one more repeat of the cables, there would have been enough room for that, and it would look like the hat in the main picture of the pattern. I would have liked that. And, it could have been a bit longer still, to be even slouchier. So next time I would not add 18,5 cm before the decreases, but maybe 20 or more.

I realized that the tubular cast on with one needle (the one without the waste yarn) is responsible for the flare of the ribbing, because you get too much slack in the thread. Jeny’s stretchy slipknot cast on is much better!
