Notes
  • This is the pink version. I intend to add 20R to the overall length to get to ~20” of length. I’ve spread these rounds over the full shrug, adding one round to various segments. I should have enough yarn to do this with the colours chosen.

  • Per previous version, I estimate that I’ll need 20g for A and B, 45g for C and D, 60 grams for E, 30g for F and 10g for G, H and I. This assumes approx 1g of yarn per strand (or per 2 strands when using lace-weight yarn). Additional rounds make the shrug longer but also use more yarn. So these amounts are estimates that may change depending on the grist of the yarn and how many additional rounds I might wish to knit in any of these colours. Update: See below for more…

  • At first, I intended to use a hot pink yarn as colourway E but I didn’t like the marl so I opted lower contrast to give the shawl a more cohesive palette - and because I had enough yarn to use the same colour for C and F. I like the impact.

Based on the fade chart, I’ll need:

A 19 rounds - Isager beige
B 20 rounds - KFO white pink
C 39 rounds - Mondim peach pink
D 44 rounds - Rowan antique pink
E 59 rounds - E1 (marl) WM oyster / E2 (held double) Scheepjes cool white
F 32 rounds - Mondim peach pink
G 10 rounds - KFO white pink
H 10 rounds - Julie Asselin tonal pink
I 8 rounds - Woolfolk grey white

  • Note that the above intel views rounds in terms of single strand of fingering (or double strand of lace-weight). So 19R is 19R worth of the yarn held single. I’ve quantified things this way because yarns are marled and so sometimes they’re held double (which counts as 2R) and sometimes they’re held single (which counts as 1R).

  • Note that the numbers below reflect the inclusion of 20 more rows than instructed, which were distributed throughout colourways based on yardage per colour. I aimed to put more of the add-on rounds into the single colour segments rather than in the marled ones.

In this version, I used the following number of grams per colour (which I’ll use as a baseline for the next version that I make):

A: 25g
B: 18g (note this is est as I used same yarn for G)
C: 35g (note this is est as I used same yarn for F)
D: 34g
E: 58g
F: 29g
G: 9g
H: 14g (Grams might be artificially high cuz yarn was robust fingering)
I: 8g

  • In total I used 229g of yarn (vs the 237g used to make the previous Friday Shrug). So I think it’s safe to say that this takes 230-240g of fingering-weight yarn presuming that you increase the length/depth by ~20 rounds, over and above what the pattern recommends. It would likely take 210g-220g if you follow the pattern exactly. Of course, the grist of the fingering yarn would have an impact…

Preblocked Gauge: 20” length and 28” of circ (unstretched).

Postblocked Gauge: 19” length and 26” of circ (unstretched).

Final Thoughts:

  • This one turned out very well, IMO. I may actually have to keep it for myself, though that was not my initial intent.

  • This fits snugly over my shoulders. I might try 168st next time, just to see if it will fit better. A lot will depend on how this version stretches on wear. Thus far, I’ve only worn Saturday Shrugs made from DK/worsted weight yarn and they stretched adequately at 150st.

  • Some things I’ve learned about fading thus far: 1. Use colourways close in value and brightness. This is how to make the marl look organic / moving from one colour to another with no visual jar. 2. Don’t make the marl segments as deep as the single colour segments or the same number of rounds on either side of a single colour segment. That’s another way to keep things organic. If every colour change has the same number of rows over 3 bands, they will look like 2 marled stripes and a single shade stripe - which isn’t the objective of a fade IMO.

  • Cost: This shrug has been made with deep stash remnants, some unknitted/reclaimed yarn and a couple of skeins of gifted yarn. As such, it is effectively free.

Options in stash:

Isager Sock - Beige 38g (Neutrals - A or B)
KFO - White Pink - 27g ( Neutrals - A or B)
Woolly M - Off White (cool) - 16g / Blackberry Basket - 12g (It’s like 30g together (Neutrals - A or B)
Quince Willett 20g (A or B but not so neutral, could be a standby…)

Rowan Fine Lace - Soft Pink - 76g + 7g / held double 41g (C or D OR F)
Mad Tosh - Unicorn Speckle Pink - 41g (C or D) May be too girly pink.
Handspun Corriedale Pink Mink 57g (C or D or E OR F)
Retrosaria - Light Pink - 100g (E or F)
Kelbourne Woolens Hot Pink 100g (E or F)

  1. Beautifully dyed
  2. Very sturdy (even though I'd call this a light fingering) but it didn't last up for me in socks.
  3. There's a lot of lanolin in the yarn and it's quite tightly spun and rustic, so there's more friction than you might imagine. Could be easier on arthritic hands but it does keep one's hands soft!
