Notes

Test knit for Caitlin Hunter of Boylandknits.
I am testing the size 3 with a 54” finished bust circumference. Pattern suggests 15-20” of positive ease. My bust is 35.5” so this gives me 18.5” of positive ease for this test.

The yarn I am using is Patagonia by Juniper Moon Farms which is 100% wool. I wanted something more natural and earthy for this cardigan. I went with the colour Smoked which is a mid grey.

April 23
Did a couple of gauge swatches and let them dry over night. I had to go up 2 needle sizes (or 0.5 mm) from suggested needle size to achieve gauge. I am using a US 6/4mm as my main needles. After blocking my swatch was 4” with the recommended 19s x 29 rows.

April 24
Finally was able to cast on the cardigan which starts with the back panel. I recommend marking the short rows (there were 11 for each side for size 3) with a stitch maker so you can easily see where they are. My yarn is a bit darker so I am glad I thought of this. If not it would have been difficult to see where they were.

April 27
Finished the back chart this morning. The chart was very easy to follow with a simple 5 stitch repeat. I am about 1” into the stockinette. I didn’t knit much over the weekend so I am very happy with my progress so far.

April 29

I cast off the back piece today. I went up 0.5mm on the suggested needles for the ribbing. I used US 4/3.5mm. Total yardage used for this piece is approximately 481 yards.

Even though I haven’t had much time to knit since casting on, I feel as though it is flying off the needles. The pattern is really easy to follow.

April 30

I cast on the left front piece yesterday. It was super quick in comparison to the back. I marked the short rows as I did with the back piece. Really helped when having to knit the wrap together with its stitch.

Cast off the front left piece tonight. I used a total of 149 yards for this piece.

May 3

I had cast on the right front piece on May 2nd.
Marked the short rows as I did for the other pieces.

Cast off the front right this evening. I used approximately 149 yards for this piece which matches the yardage used for the front left piece.

Lightly steamed the edges that were to be seamed.

May 4

Seamed all the pieces together. Steaming the edges really helped with the seams as they were really curled.
I used approximately 2g or 8 yards for seaming. I did have a lot of extra but I would rather have too much than too little length.

To date I have used a total of 787 yards.

Picked up the sleeve stitches. I marked the sleeve round every 1/4 to ensure I was picking up stitches evenly has there are a lot of stitches to pick up. Got a few rows in. It is nice to knit in the round vs. flat. I do not think the sleeves will take long.

May 5

Finished the first sleeve. It’s laying a little stiff so I’m hoping blocking will relax it. Going to wait to cast on the second sleeve tomorrow. Used approximately 103 yards for the first sleeve.

May 7

Finished the second sleeve. I used the same amount of yardage as the first sleeve which was 103 yards. Unblocked they are laying just around my elbow crease.

Picked up the stitches for the collar. This was my first time ever doing this as I’ve never made a cardigan before. Use math to figure out how many stitches to pick up and did it by each section. I ended up casting on 250 sts which matches the recommendation multiples of 4+2.

First couple rows felt awkward because of the amount of stitches and long U shape but after row 3 it’s going to be smooth sailing.

May 8

Cast off this morning!

I used approximate 76 yards for the collar so that brings my total yardage used to 1,070.

I am a little worried I did not cast on enough collar stitches because the ends are curling quite a bit. I chose to wet block it rather than steam.
It is currently laying flat to drive and the curling at the ends seams to have stopped. So excited to wear this.

Here are some of my measurements pre-blocked / blocked

  • Length middle back: 21.25” / 23.75”
  • Underarm to sleeve cuff: 7” / 7.75”
  • Bust circumference: 52.5” / 54.25”
  • Sleeve circumference: 19.5” / 20”
  • Width from sleeve to sleeve: 39” / 46.5”
