Notes

My mom needs slippers that are stretchy and these are nice and stretchy. She wants a nice cushy bottom so I’m going to see if I can double knit the sole. blush

I’m going to make the bottoms double knit with 4.5mm needles using Universal Yarn Classic Worsted doubled in the colour Night. Then I’ll switch to knit the tops with 6.5mm needles in Caron Simply Soft doubled in the colour Cobalt Blue.

I ran out of the 50g skein of Universal Yarn Classic Worsted almost halfway through the last row. The soles used 102.5g (184.5m/201.9y). 37.7g left.

I showed a swatch with 3 different ribbed eyelet patterns to my mom and she chose this one -

Row 1(RS) - Yo, k2tog, p2, k2, p2, ssk, yo. (10 sts)
Row 3 - P1, k1, yo, p2tog, k2, p2tog, yo, k1, p1. (10 sts)

I’m done the ribbing. Grandma would like a fold-down cuff so I’ll see what I can do.blush

I used the cuff pattern from Better Dorm Boots Deluxe. The slipper tops used 141.7g (239m/262y)of Caron Simply Soft in Cobalt Blue.

The slippers weighed 244.2g.

I used 4mm needles for the double knitting and 5.5mm needles for the stocking stitch on my first swatch.

This is for the Caron Simply Soft. The double knit gauge was 3-1/2” wide over 13 doubled sts (26 total sts) on 4mm needles, so I tried 4.5mm needles and the gauge was 3-5/8” wide. The stocking stitch was 3” wide over 11 sts on 5.5mm needles. To match the pattern’s gauge the double knit should’ve been 3-3/4” wide and the stocking stitch should’ve been 3” over 10.5 sts.

Now I’m going to use 5mm needles for the double knit and 6mm needles for the stocking stitch part. Using 5mm needles I got the pattern gauge of 14sts/4” in double knitting. With 6mm needles I got the pattern gauge of 14sts/4” in stocking stitch. With 7mm needles I got the gauge of 14 sts/4-1/8” in stocking stitch.

I’m going to redo the swatch because I didn’t knit many rows, but the Classic Worsted had the correct gauge of 3-3/4” over 13 doubled sts on 4mm needles.

This time I knit more rows and with 4mm needles I got a gauge of 3-7/8” over 14 doubled stitches. I switched to 5mm needles and got a gauge of 4-1/8” over 14 doubled stitches. Now I’m going to switch to 4.5mm needles, then I’ll wash and dry the swatch. With the 4.5mm needles I got a gauge of 4” over 14 doubled stitches.

After washing and drying the swatch in the washer and dryer it’s 3-3/4” wide with the 4mm needles, 4-1/8” wide with the 5mm needles, and 4” wide with the 4.5mm needles.

The skein of Caron Simply Soft weighed 170g. The second skein weighed 171.4g.
The skein of Universal Classic Worsted weighed 97.1g, which weighs 50g after swatching. The second skein weighed 93.8g.
