All rows/rounds that had directions needed correcting, starting with row 1. First time I haven’t rated a pattern with a 5 out of 5, but I did use all my yarn.
The pattern has an uneven amount of sts to the left and right of the markers. I wanted Rows 1 and 2 have an even number of stitches at the beginning and end, because I wanted both the left and right fronts to be the same size, leaving an odd number of stitches for the back. Making the edge stitch garter stitch. Adding stitch counts to each row. I hope I don’t have to correct any more rows. No such luck. Now to fix rows 3 and 4.
After Row 4 there are 47 sts. Repeat rows 3 - 4 five (not 10) more times (10 rows total) which totals 14 rows. (87 sts)
Fixed all above issues.
Row 15 starts with making the sleeves, not the armhole.
After 14 rows there are 87 sts, however, row 15 of the pattern totals 85 sts. At the beginning there are 2 sts after the marker before the back sts, however, there are 4 sts after the original marker before the back sts. I need to balance both sides plus add in the 2 sts that should be there. Between the first set of new stitch markers there are 5 stitches, between the second set of new markers there are 7 stitches. That won’t do.
The sleeves start with a different amount of stitches (5 and 7). The stitch count after repeating Rows 15 and 16 two more times has the sleeves ending with an equal number of sts (no explanation for how), and the correct total number of stitches (111) instead of being two short like at the end of Row 14 (no explanation for how), but not the correct breakdown between the fronts, sides and back.
Fixed all the above issues.
I want the same amount of stitches before the increase as after the increase at the end of the row. As written, Row 21 doesn’t have the correct amount of sts (47 sts). Row 22 is purled except for the edge sts at each end.
I fixed the issues.
Now to continue the sleeve increases 6 more times - 7 times total. For front increases, counting from Row 21, work them after 6 rows, after 4 rows, after 2 rows and after 1 row - 4 more times - 5 times total. Purl even numbered rows with 1 edge stitch at the beginning and end.
Row 35 has increases at the left and right edges plus either side of all the markers. As written, it only uses 117 sts. Row 36 has 172 sts.
Row 36 repeats all increases, then cast on 5 sts for a cardigan.
Row 37 repeats all increases, then cast on 5 sts.
Pattern has 185 sts (5 sts - 23 sts - 39 sts - 51 sts - 39 sts - 23 sts - 5 sts).
The pattern removes one of the sleeves on Row 37, then in the next directions for Row 38 it mentions moving both sleeves sts, which is what I’m going to do.
It used 44.1g (132.3m/145.5y) - 163.6g left.
There’s a reminder in all caps to remember to keep the first and last 5 sts in garter stitch, then proceeds to tell you to purl them on Row 38!
Then you put a marker on the centre of the back sts with 53 sts on each side.
I fixed all the issues. (For now )
For the body, start with 4 rows of stocking stitch.
The short row darts should be widest at the side with the point towards the bust. The pattern has the widest point at the front edge towards the bust, ignoring the button bands.
I wasn’t separating the fronts and back so I could work the bust darts so I didn’t add them.
Fixed the issues.
My body stitch count is different so I’ll need to figure out how many decreases I need to work with the charts and the stitches on both sides plus the stitches in between the charts.
Fixed the issues.
I finished the 12 rows of decreases so I put the body stitches on hold to finish the sleeves, then I can use the rest up on the body.
It used 24.2g (72.6m/79.86y). There’s 139.4g left. Total used - 68.3g (204.9m/225.4y).
For the sleeves you put the sts back on the needles, pick up 3 sts on the body and put a marker on the second one for the centre sleeve stitch. Then you join to knit in the round and knit the second stitch but the yarn is hanging after the 3rd stitch that was picked up, ready to go. However, without knitting the sleeve stitches you’re only joining 3 stitches to knit in the round. That won’t do. After mentioning that you’re joining to knit in the round, then keeps mentioning rows throughout.
Fixed the issues.
Pattern instructions for the sleeves for Twisted Edge. There are 35 stitches.
purl 2 rows, knit 1 row, purl 1 row.
* set up row (first row of diagram):
purl the mesh under the arms,(3 total sts) then purl 1 st (4 total sts) do the diagram B on the following 6 meshes, purl 3 m repeat 2 times, (9 sts x 2 reps = 18 sts) (18
* 4 = 22 total sts) do the diagram B on the following 6 meshes, purl 3 m repeat 2 times. ( 9 sts x 2 reps = 18 sts) (18 sts + 22 sts = 40 total sts)After the last cable, purl just 1 st.(41 total sts) There are only 35 sts so there’s 6 sts extra as written. This won’t do.
The instructions only tells you to use chart B for all the cables. This won’t do.
Continue with diagrams A and B without the second row (16 rows). There are 18 rounds to the charts so after skipping the second round there will be 17 rounds, not 16 rounds. This won’t do.
Purl 2 rows knit 1 row, purl 1 row.
Fixed all the issues.
I figured out how many decreases I needed over the rounds I had before I needed to start on the Twisted Edge.
I finished the sleeves! They’re 39cm (15-1/2”) long and end at my wrists. They used 52.9g (158.7m/174.6y) - 86.5g left.
I finished the 4 rows of the Twisted Edge above and below the cable charts, plus the charts, on the body. The body is 25cm (10”) long from the underarms and 47cm (18-1/2”) long from the back neck. It used 30.5g (91.5m/100.7y) - 56g left.
Now I’m going to keep going until I run out of yarn.
I finished the 16 increase rows. It’s 11cm (4-1/2” long). It used 23.6g (70.8m/77.9y) - 32.4g left.
I finished the cardigan with 0.9g left (2.7m/3y). It turned out perfectly in the end.
My gauge is perfect! The cardigan used 206.8g (620.4m/682.4y). The cardigan is 73cm (28-3/4”) long from the back neck and 51cm (20”) long from the underarm to the bottom. The collar is 22cm (8-3/4”) long from the back neck. With the button bands (4.5cm/1-3/4” wide) overlapping, the bust measures 97cm (38”) in circumference, at the cables it’s 79cm (31”) in circumference, and it’s 106cm (41-3/4”) in circumference and the bottom hem.
With the buttons it weighs 244.5g.
The sleeves are 41cm (16”) long from the underarm to the cuff. The sleeves are 36 cm (14-1/4”) in circumference at the underarm, 28cm (11”) in circumference just above the Twisted Edge, 24cm (9-1/2”) in circumference in the middle of the cable pattern, and 32cm (12-1/2”) at the cuff.
The only thing listed under the abbreviation list for the mystery stitch “m” was m = mesh, that’s it! No explanation at all! Knitting it as stocking stitch as that’s what the finished sweater looks like.
The ball weighed 207.7g. I needed 8mm needles to get gauge.
