I’ve been admiring these Capucine hats for a while. Justin gave me a lovely blue yarn for christmas (he picked it out himself, imagine that) and I grabbed some grey tweed-like yarn that’s been in my stash for like 8 years and they went great together. Used 2 strands of grey and 1 of the blue. I started the hat as written but it was crazy big, so I restarted (see list of alterations below). Size was perfect on repeat. The hat looks pretty weird until you add the tassles (first time I’ve ever made tassels, I like them!).
It’s ready just in time for the ski trip I’m going on in 2 days!
My alterations: (be aware my gauge is loose at baseline)
- cast on 78.
- 12 rows of 2x2 rib
- 4 rows of garter stitch before beginning the decrease rows. Did 3 double-decrease rows then 1 single-decrease row.
- Did 6 more rows of garter stitch.
- Did 6 rows of stockinette stitch before joining into the round. I cast on 3 additional stitches as I joined in the round to give a little extra room at the back of the neck.
- Decreased as described in the pattern.
Tassels: For tassels this length, I wrapped all three strands at once (2 grey and 1 blue) around the short axis of a DVD case and then cut along the spine. I bound them tightly with extra grey yarn. I think the extra long binding gives the tassels a nice professional-finished look.
