Notes

I made this blanket awhile ago (2016) and gave it away to charity, to be donated to a children’s ward in a major hospital, here in Melbourne, Australia.

Few fellow Ravelers asked me about the face, how to make it. Unfortunately, there may be some small details I cannot remember well, but in the posted photos I included the notes I wrote at the time I made the blanket which I believe with a bit of your own imagination and input you can succeed in making one too :)

Now, trying to answer you… For this project I took the advice given in the notes posted by BananahHannah.

The face:

I found a free Spider Man face template on the internet that I printed and transferred on a crochet graph - the crochet graph also found free on another website (something to do with crochet.about.com …).

The template for the face I used was about 13cm/19cm.

Regarding the graph, I considered / approximated the squares to be equal to:
1 square = 1 sc in 1 row; hence 1 row of squares=1 row of sc’s.
I transferred the face to the graph and then…voila… I approximately had the face. See the photo with the chart.

From here on I constructed the face more like freeform crochet. It appears from my notes that I used a 4.0mm hook for the face and 5.0mm hook for the blanket.
On the left side of the chart you can see the no’s of rows; on the right side the no’s of stitches per each row. Each square or ‘x’ in a square is a sc ; the dots from the edges of face represent the increases or decreases as I progressed with the face.

After I finished the face (about 43 rows), for a better execution, I worked around the exterior of the face making two rounds: first one with red then second with black… but can’t remember very well how… you may be able to decipher that from the notes on the chart :)

When I was happy with the face outcome, I used chalk and drew the web lines on the face, also making sure the ends of lines will match those web lines on the blanket. You can see that on the photos I posted. I sewed the web lines using the back stitch - perhaps I could’ve done a better job with sewing :) . I didn’t sew any web lines under the eyes.

The eyes: I made a shape that would resemble those from the template (of course :) ) . I sewed them on face and before finishing/closing them I inserted a bit of toy filling to make them pop out a tinny bit.

I updated my project with few photos about the template I used and the notes I took then regarding the face and eyes. Unfortunately, I don’t have any ‘recipe’ for the face, but I hope my notes, photos and a bit of imagination will be enough for you to be able to make a face too! Just try it, it’s great fun!
