Read a CraftSanity blog post about making your own potholder loops from t-shirts and thought I’d give it a try. 2 different width rectangles were mentioned, so I cut one loop of each. After stretching both onto my loom, I decided to cut thirtysix 2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ loops, enough to make one potholder. (Using a plastic potholder loom, like in bottom photo.)

I found 2 1/2” too wide – not enough room on my little loom for all that fabric!!… I finished by skipping a peg every now and then, which created a slightly rectangular and STIFF potholder, so stiff it stands on edge! lol

Later, I found this video, which recommends 2 x 6 1/2” loops for the wooden CraftSanity loom that has 13 pegs.

I now use ** 1 3/8 x 6 1/4” loops on plastic 18 peg potholder looms.**
NOTE: Be sure to cut strips horizontally, going across the width of the t-shirt, not vertically AND that the t-shirt is plain knit fabric, not Ribbed.

I line up each loop so the rounded ends (I call them tabs) go over the loom pegs, different from the random way they’re loaded in the video. This makes a much neater looking potholder in the end.

P.S. My main reason for making this particular potholder was to find out the ratio of looper length to loom size… 5.5″ loop to 7″ loom = .78, which I can now apply to my 16 1/2″ x 20 1/2″ picture frame loom.

Next up, I hope… DIY placemat-sized loops!
