Land to Hand Mitts

My husband and I love to go watch the salmon returning to their spawning grounds in Idaho and this is where I found the lichen in July.

I think this is Umbilicaria americana.

I waited three months for the dye bath to develop.. So much anticipation.

First I soaked my handspun in very hot water.

I thought it was so interesting how the white cotton yarn I used to tie the skein took the dye so differently.

The article said to just do one ounce at a time. So for my second batch I added 2 cups of water to the original bath and repeated the process.

This one I did last year from a different type of black lichen. I think it will be a good contrast for the mitts and fit into the lichen theme.
