I bought this yarn for this hat to make my for my 3 and 7 year old granddaughters who enjoy going ice fishing in North Dakota.

This hat is giving me trouble. She talks about gauge difference for width but not length. I first knit the hat as directed with size 7 needles and the 2 to 7 year old size easily fits an adult. The hat grew in length not width after blocking. Her gauge directions suggested it would grow in width not length. I think the Highland Wool is listed as an Aran weight and so the gauge is really off when you add the Tila.

I am now trying my second hat, the first hat will go to their mother. I have gone down to a US 3 needle size, which gives me a row gauge of 30/15. I am using the baby size pattern and also doing a proportionate conversion from her gauge to mine for the length measurements. Using her row gauge of 36/18 I think the length to add on to the top square to end up with the 2-7 size should be 5 1/2 inches, which ends up to be 42/21 rows for my gauge.

I think the second hat will fit great.

Since there is yarn left over I decided to lengthen the hat by following a basic top down raglan sleeve pattern but using a broken seed stitch.

The hats still have lots of grow room. If I made them again I would use different yarn.
