I wanted a less-triangular shawl, so I did 10 repeats of the increase section as written, followed by 3 repeats of the increase section with only 2 increases per repeat. Then I knit “straight” rows until my yarn was half gone (by weight). I had to fudge the decreases a little because I was running out of yarn at the end, but you really can’t tell on the finished shawl.
