This was fun to knit, but I had to learn new techniques to complete it. The provisional cast-on was new to me, but quite easy once I checked it on-line. The bobbles were new too, but an easy thing to learn. Just remember to pull the bobble yarn tight after you finish each bobble. I didn’t cut the yarn after each bobble, but just carried the bobble yarn across to the next bobble. It worked great and there are fewer ends to deal with when you finish knitting.
I did a “jogless stripe” on the Neck where you have black & grey stripes. Also at row 2 of the Head. You can see the results of that in the 4th photo down.
I could not for the life of me get the head properly done in purl stitch on DPNs. There was always a “ladder” formed where you start on the next needle. I searched on-line and found two suggestions, but neither one worked for me and I still ended up with a ladder. After purling that head three separate times trying the different techniques, I finally ripped it out for good and just knit it in stockingnette stitch all around. I think it looks good, but it doesn’t have the same “dome” quality as in the original pattern.
I changed the blast gun by knitting I-cord using double the yarn and knitting 12 rows then bind off. It was easier than knitting a tube, and it looks correct size-wise (I checked on a Dalek webpage).
The bottom intimidated me at first because I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be knit in the round. It was, of course, and with the decreases all around it, it did actually sit flat when it was done.
I used the Kitchener Stitch to sew up the bottom when you transfer the remaining 26 stitches to two needles. I followed the instructions in my handy knitting guide “Stitch ‘n Bitch” and found it really easy to do.
I used 1 skein of yarn for the body (grey) and had a little bit left over. There was lots of the contrast yarn (black) left over from the 1 skein I bought.
Good luck if you’re going to try knitting this … if you have any questions, just ask :)
