My daughter grew up with the Harry Potter books … I read the first couple of books to her, then she started reading them on her own. They were the transition books for her, and I never read books to her after she started these. She loved, and still loves, the series of books, and even read the covers off a couple of her favourites. We waited patiently for the books to be published and had her name down on the waiting lists.
When I showed her this hat on Ravelry, she exclaimed “Oh! I love that hat!” as she recognized it immediately as Hermione’s hat in the movie. So I told her I would make it for her.
The yarn I had was a bit heavier than the suggested yarn in the pattern, but after bouts of uncertainty, I finally just knit it up in the yarn that I had (see above notes). It came out really good, just not as delicate as the original, and a bit more fuzzy & thick. Hopefully since it’s 50% Alpaca & 50% Wool, it will be nice and warm.
I used size 3 US needles throughout because I didn’t want to knit the heavier yarn with size 2 US needles.
I just did a regular long-tail cast-on and it was still stretchy enough for the ribbing.
Rather than 10 rows in ribbing at the start, I worked 12 rows … I have a hat with narrow ribbing and wish it was a little deeper there, so I made this hat deeper in the ribbing.
I love this hat, and I hope Sam does too :)
