05-24-2017, In which I pick a fight with my own brain
It’s all Steven Be’s fault. Really. I went in to try several different types of interchangeable needles, so that I can tell my girlfriend what to buy me for my birthday. They were terribly, terribly nice, and let me try things with some waste yarn. So, after, I looked around for something to buy, and saw this lovely gold/smoke/purple ombre lace weight mohair silk blend. I’ve never worked with mohair. “How hard can it be?” thought I. So, seriously, I don’t know why I bother thinking. Not only does it not help, but encourages me to do stupid things.
Mohair. It’s a lotta damn trouble. Ok, you experienced, skilled knitters, I’m sure it’s not trouble for _you_. Me? It’s trouble. Also, although moss stitch is about as easy as you can get, bar garter, I still had to frog three times to get properly started. I mean, seriously, brain, what is your point? You don’t keep me out of trouble, and then you create needless errors just so I can’t start a project clean. It’s all very well to look wise and say, “It’s my process,” but that’s for the rubes. In point of fact, it’s stupid and annoying and I wish you’d just cut it out.
5/27/17: So, mohair. You know how tearing back with beads is like a special hell? Mohair is that times ten. That stuff just really, really likes to knot around itself. Also, the fuzziness makes it hard to see the stitches, so that makes errors even more likely. Really, brain, what were you thinking?
The stuff is very soft and very pretty. I like the pattern, I like the way it’s turning out. And I switched to my brand new Chiagoo lace tip 5” interchangeable needles, and my aren’t they the bomb. Thank you, Beth! Best birthday present ever! The pattern has become boring, which is too bad, because I’ve got a lot more to go. But it’s quite pretty with this yarn.
On my list of “why did I ever?” are cats, just at the moment. Somebody, probably Ninja, got into my bag, took out one of the skeins of the mohair, and messed with it. I was able to salvage it, and rewind it, but it was difficult. I didn’t lose any yardage, but seriously, cats. What the hell?
6/3/17: I have reached the recommended number of reps. I have most of a ball left. I now need to decide if I want to to a few more reps and make it longer. This is a placeholder project for my placeholder project, for fuck’s sake. The yarn for the actual placeholder project came five days ago. But, you know, it might be nice if it were a little longer…
6/3/17: And scene! Did 28 reps, instead of 27, measured it, found it a good foot longer than I thought it was, and honestly, I was bored, anyway. So, now to my other placeholder project, so that I can get to the one I actually want to do.
