I have started this project few weeks ago and am just estimating the date. The socks are for my lovely soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Noelle. Her birthday is on December 7th and she love funky socks!
the yarn comes in a box wound into 2 identical skeins. It is a Hand-dyed Self-Striping Matching Sock-Kit and the color is called Christmas. I have decided to jazz it up a bit and add a bit of sparkle - just where the colors change. I am using a gold color Astra yarn by Land Yarns.
All i do is just carry the gold in between he changes and knit the 2 yarns together when the change takes place.

I am not using any written pattern.

This is what i have done so far:
-Cast on 64 on size 1 needles.
1x1 rib for about 1.5”.
-Plain stockinette for 8 stripes, that is about 3.75”.
-On stripe 9 decreased 1 stitch in the back.
-Decreased another 2 stitches on stripes 11th, 13th,
and 15th.
-Decreased 1 more stitches on stripe 17th.
-Total stitches decreased in the back of the leg -8.
-Ended up with 56 stitches around the ankle.
-Heel flap on half of that, that is 28+2=30 stitches.
-Kept 3 border stitches on the flap in garter, the
middle 24 stitches in so-called “eye of the partridge”,
that is alternating sl1, k1 with a plain row in between.
-Heel flap knitted till had 15 garter ridges and ended
on purl side row.
-Heel turn - s1, k15, ssk, k1, turn
-s1, p3, p2tog, p1, turn
- continue consuming the stiches till had 16.
-Gusset pickup - 16 on each side + 2 for corners (to be
decreased on next round). Picked up only one strand.
-Top of foot - 26, bottom with gussets - 48 = 74 total.
-Decrease gussets every other row till had 60 total
stitches.
-Toes start on 30/30. Decrease every other row till had 14/14. then every row till had 10/10.
-Bind of with Kitchener on the needless method.

After finishing both socks I decided to rip out the cast-on edge and add on an outrageous, gold-trimmed ruffle! The cast-on was a bit tight anyways.

Here is what I did:
-Cut off the cast-on and picked out all the cut stitches (all green). Put the live stitches back on the needles (DPNs size 1) and increased 1 stitch to end up with 64 stitches.

  • Knitted 2 rows plain.
  • After the above was complete I reversed the direction to work from the inside. This is because i intended the ruffle to fold down along the top edge. I simply turn the knitting inside-out, slipped 1 stitch, and continued knitting around for 2 rows, which now appeared as purl rows viewed from the right side.
  • Next row - k1, yo all around, thus doubling the number of stitches.
  • Knit 2 rows plain.
  • Switch to a 16” circular size 1.5 and started adding the gold yarn at every change of colors.
  • Next row - k1, yo, k3, yo all around
  • knit 2 rows plain
  • Next row - k1, yo, k5, yo all around - 256 stitches
  • Knit 3 rows plain
  • Bind off using a crochet hook size 7 holding both yarns together. Bound off 1 stitch, then chain 3 and continue to the next stitch, chain 3, etc…
  • Dropped the main yarn and using only the gold yarn crocheted all around the edge chaining 2 between each stitch.

In case Noelle doesn’t like the ruffle I can always rip and and replace it with something else.

I just finished! The socks are soaking now. Tomorrow’s is Noelle’s birthday! Hope she will like them.
btw… the photos don’s do them justice. They look much better. Red is so difficult to photograph. And they are fun!!!
