Key elements and modifications:

-Making these top down. Cast on using the German Twisted method. 70 st+1 stitches - the extra stitch for smoothing out the join.
-Making short heel flap on 40 stitches. First 2 rows plain knit, then 10 rows of slipped stitch pattern.
-Making mini gussets - 5 increased stitches on each side (in purl)
-Making short row heel on 40 stitches with reinforcement acrylic thread.

The leg - 17 repeats of the pattern.
For the above-heel flap - separated 38 stitches with markers. Want 40 stitches for the heel (and heel flap), therefore increased 1 knit stich on each side - that is between the cabled pattern and purl stitches. Now had 74 stitches all around,
Heel flap on 40 stitches. First 2 rows plain knit on the flap - 1st of them is the row with 2 increases - and pattern in he front. 72 stitches all around.
Then start the slipped stitch pattern and gusset increases. 10 rows of slipped stitch pattern (+ 2 first plain rows). Last row is plain. Gusset increases in purls - second stitch before and after the flap.
5 gusset increases on each side - 82 stitches all around.
Short row heel with reinforcement. Firs wrap falls on the bordering purl stitch (stitch 41). same on the other side.
14 stitches left unwrapped in the middle. 14 wraps on each side (including the one around purl stitch).
After the 1st set of short rows is complete, 2 full rounds to combine the wraps (without the reinforcement thread)
Second set of short rows starts right after the 12 center unwrapped stitches.

hmmm… somehow i ended up with 42 heel stitches. After close inspection i realized that the outermost wrapped purl stitches were turned into knit stitches. I must have done it when picking up those last wraps. as a consequence, I have 2 extra sole stitches and I am not yet sure if i will have to get rid of them or not.

After finishing the heel 2 full rounds, then started decreasing the gussets every other round. Down to 72 leaving only 1 purl stitch on each side of the cabled panel. Couple rows later 2 more stitches decreased - 1 on each side of the sole 4 stitches away form the edge. Repeat the last 2 deceases about 1.5” later - down to 68 stitches.

Toes worked with the reinforcement. Start with 34/34 stitches.
Decreased every other round till had 18/18, then every round till had 10/10. Grafted on the needles. 64 g of yarn left after finishing the 1st sock. 36 repeats of the 4 row “Yarn over Cable” pattern on the front of the sock.
