This is going to be a big project. Hand dyeing all the yarn used in this blanket.
Yarn: Aran weight Cheviot superwash from World of Wool.
Today starting measuring yardage of my yarn, skeining it up and did my first batch of dyeing.
Niddy noddy is 67”. 100 wraps of the n.n x 67” = 6,700 “
6,700” divided by 36” (1 yd ) = 241 yards to the nearest yard per 100g of yarn or 100 wraps on the n.n.
Colours:
A Pale teal = 2 skeins (444 yds )
B Pale blue = 1.5 skeins (296 yds )
C cream = 1.5 skeins (296 yds )
D Lime green 80g (191yds)
E Camel 2.5 skeins (573 yds)
F Dark green 1.5 skeins (296 yds)
G Lilac pink 2 skeins (444 yds)
H Pale lilac grey 2.5 skeins (568 yds)
I Raspberry 1.5 skeins (284 yds)
All dyed up and balled. Project is started!
J Dark grey 5 skeins (1,136 yds )
K Yellow daffodil 60g (142 yds)
Orange, I had some hand dyed, hand spun Shetland from another project, I used this for the bobbles, no other reason than it was in my stash bag.
Completed All the yarn dyeing.
Colours worked a treat. Lovely earthy colours. Perfect! Let’s hope I have done enough of each colour.

I have not included any beads in this design. You can hardly notice them in the actual pattern book, so I left them all out.
Very short of J dark grey once all the ‘parts’ were finished. To the point I have had to dye another batch. This time I dyed another 300yds of Aran yarn, but of an unknown breed as I had not enough Cheviot left - 100% pure wool. Colour is a bit more solid and darker, but as it will be for sewing up and the border I might get away with it.
I did but I very nearly ran out of steel again it was a close call.
Ran out of camel. But at a good place - the border. Luckily I had enough for two sides of the border. So opposite ends are different to one another. I had Miles of teal left so two opposite sides were finished in teal the other two in camel. Worked just dandy.
Pattern says to block only at the end. But all the flower squares are lumpy and uneven along their sides, so I’m going to block these first before joining them to get a nice even centre piece before the borders are started.
Well and truly on my way now. All in Aran weight pure wool.
Blocked gently the 9 large central flower squares and very pleased I did. I blocked them with a blocking board so all thirteen in total squares are identical in size.
I just have to finish off the putting it altogether now and then the final border. Very pleased with it so far. If anyone does fancy making this and hand dyeing all your yarn as I have done, follow the recommended yarn quantity in meters or yards but make sure you have about 200 m more of steel I was very short of this, but it easily dyed up to match the other steel batches thankfully. It would take a real expert eye to notice and the different vat lots don’t spoil the over all look.
Tonight Monday 17 December I weaved in my last end having completed this beautiful project.
What a blanket it is. Picture taken on our king sized bed. It was worth using Aran weight yarn. One of the nicest blankets I’ve made and chuffed to bits to have hand dyed every colour used.
I just love it!
Hand Dyes used were bought from The Threshing Barn in Cumbria. The range is called ‘Gay Wool’ dye, and I chose the ‘Bush’ colours.
https://threshingbarn.com/product-category/gaywool-dyes/
I used the Bush Blend range.
Colours chosen were:
Ivy mixed with Alpine (Teal)
Willow (Dark Green)
Peppercorn (raspberry)
Salmon (Lilac Pink)
Stringybark (Camel)
Lime green (Peppermint)
Pale Lilac was a mix of Salmon and a touch of Grey from WoW.
Daffodil yellow (Wattle)
Steel, I used the Grey colour purchased from World of Wool, Here:
