Bragg’s dad raises show pigeons so I thought a bird hat would be cute. This is a mash up of elements from a few hats I’ve made before and a couple of “let’s wing this” pieces (aka the wings, ha).

Hat
CO 72 with twisted German cast on
15 rounds garter on size 4 needles starting with purl
stockinette on size 7 needles until 4.5” from co
Decreases:
k7, k2tog around
k 1 round
k6, k2tog around
k 1 round
k5, k2tog around
etc. - decreasing by 8 each time, ending with K2tog around

Eyes
Crochet with H hook in magic loop w 6 sc, sl st, ch1. next round 12 sc. Tacked down with a scrap of black stroll glimmer, making asterisks for the center of the eyes

Beak
CO 3
kfb, knit until 1st left
purl next row
Repeat these two rows (ending with a purl row) until 11st then bind off, seam, stuff lightly, attach

Wings
The wings were tricky because I wanted them to get a little bit wider but not too wide, and be a little curly up (or down) but not roll in. I tried the kfb+k2tog combo and it somewhat kept them from rolling in on themselves - that they ended up curling up is a super great bonus, though.
