Notes

Jenna liked the look of the Nihal shawl and agreed to let me make it for her. She thought it would look stunning in burgandy, so I found the Currant color in KnitPick’s Palette yarn. The color reminds me of the grey and burgandy patterned wallpaper in my Italian grandmother’s (and Jenna’s great-grandmother’s) house.

Twisted Stitches. The Glossary w/instructions for the various twisted stitches are on the last page of the written instructions. They were extremely helpful.

Bobbles. I decided to use Nimble Needles’ instructions for the bobbles. He uses a three-stitch, five row process. It seems to make an appropriately-sized bobble (vs five-stitch, three-row bobble).

Markers. By section 2-c I realized it would be wise to use markers to separate the pattern repetitions. While it’s fairly easy to see where you are in the pattern on the right side, I found it less so on the wrong side.

Each pattern repetition is made up of 24 stitches. I placed the first marker at the point where the asterisk appears, then another after the next 24 stitches. In Sections 2a and 2c, the last marker is 23 stitches from the end.

I did have to reposition the markers when moving from one subsection to another. I removed them when working sections 3 and 5.

In Sections 7b and 7d, the markers move from row to row. This is easily accommodated.

Yarn Usage. I used the “spit-splice” technique to join each skein of yarn. The first skein lasted through about the 28th row of Section 3. The second lasted through row 15 of Section 5.

The third skein lasted through row 24 of Section 6b. The fourth skein lasted through row 14 of Section 7c (plus a little more).

My calculation of total stitches told me I should be able to finish Sections 7c and 7d with the fifth skein.

I had 6 grams left of the fifth skein when starting the I-cord bind-off. I had 4 grams left when finished.

Bind-Off. I had used a slightly different I-cord bind-off technique on Laine Poudrée’s Châle Saison. I reviewed her recommended video by Clo-Tricot (en français), then watched Stephen West’s video on the same subject, to be sure I had the right steps for grafting the last six stitches together.
