Notes

I needed to order a 60” set of 10.5 knitting needles to accommodate the width of the shawl.

When I started, I didn’t realize that the narrow “beginning” end of the shawl would be at the neck, with the ends of the subsequent rows draping down the front.

I can see now that the pattern will be very pretty, so I’m glad I selected this pattern for this beautiful, soft yarn.

I knitted 12 rows of mesh in the final section, then added three rows of garter stitch before binding off. I think the bind-off technique** specified in the pattern is a nice complement to the design of the shawl, but would do it on the odd row (front), instead of the even. That will make the last row look wider and, I think, sit flatter. In other words, I would knit four rows of garter stitch at the end, and then bind off.

How do I know this? I actually re-knit this shawl after I realized that I’d been using the wrong “yarn-over” technique. Yarning over correctly made for a nice open mesh section and eliminated the holes made by the yarn-overs in the garter stitch sections. Doing the yarn-over correctly made for a much nicer-looking shawl.

I did block the shawl, using Suzanne Bryan’s technique. That should help with the curling at the two front corners of the shawl and also help the edging lay flat.

** I passed the recently knitted stitch first, then the
original stitch back to the left-hand needle, going both times through the back of the stitch.*
