Notes

I had four skeins of the Desert Spring yarn, two of which I had frogged from a previous project. I was able to get 16 full squares from the first generous skein, and hoped to get at least that many from the second.

I realized I should be able to make a blanket that is five diagonal squares across and seven diagonal squares long. That required 59 full squares, and 12 half squares:

(7 x 5) + (6 x 4) = 35 + 24 = 59

I outlined the scope of my proposed blanket in pencil on the pattern diagram. It made it easier to see where the D triangles needed to go.

This gave me 11 columns of squares to work:

  • Column 1: 1 square
  • Column 2: 3 squares
  • Column 3: 5 squares
  • Column 4: 7 squares
  • Column 5-7: 9 squares
  • Column 8: 7 squares
  • Column 9: 5 squares
  • Column 10: 3 squares
  • Column 11: 1 square

Triangles. By my fourth triangle, I realized I needed to read the instructions more carefully. Row 9 of Triangle B starts with 3 stitches. On the beginning of the next row, TSS under both veritcal bars of final stitch. On return pass, yo and draw yarn through both stitches. Somehow I had been skipping this last row.

For Triangle D, there should be 3 stitches on the hook after drawing up the appropriate loops. On the next row, TSS under both vertical bars of final stitch. On return pass, yo and draw yarn through both stitches.

Edging. I bought some chunky brown yarn to use as the edging. It’s a little thick, but I like the color. The designer’s instuctions for the edging worked perfectly. There are 10 single crochets in each of the side triangles (60 on a side for me). There are two single crochets in a single stitch on either side of the top and bottom “peaks” and one single crochet made over two stitches in each of the “valleys.”
