This was totally improvised for an 11 year old using photos I took in the theater. I hope it fits--she’s 1000 miles away. I’d highly recommend trying it on your victim frequently.
I knit it in two strips, one for the cowl and one for the underarm piece.
For the cowl with # 13 needles, I c/o 20 st. for a 6” width after the ribbing had scrunched up. (If you want wider or narrower, just adjust no.of ribbing sts). For the tubing-like part I used double yarn and did k4 p2 k3 and then continued in single strand. Made a nice, stiff tube without any other support. For the cabling, I did a simple 8 st pattern: Row 1: C2B, C2B, C2F, C2F Row 2 and 4 purl. Row 3: k1, C2B, k2, C2F.
To make the cowl sit on the shoulders I did a series of short rows over the shoulders until it looked right--probably 8 or 10 each side. Final measurement was about 48” on the outside edge, 43 on the neck edge.
To make the underarm swag, starting with the front, I CO 24 with #19 needles. That was too loose, I think 17s would hold shape better but still be drapey enough. I needed a piece 11” wide on the front side and 6” on the back, so decided to reduce some of the width by gradually changing to smaller needles, ending with 13s. I also decreased along the underarm edge to get back to 20 st. I did a bunch of short rows as it passed under the arm and finished the last few inches flat to where it tied in at the back V. The crazy piece measured 11 and 6 inches on the ends and 17 and 24 inches on the sides. I decided to not do the back neck insert tubing. She’ll never miss it.
Total yarn required was 210 yds, a little over 2 skeins.
One thing about this piece: it’s REALLY warm.
