Notes

For Laurie’s belated wedding present. She loved the original ones so I hope she will enjoy this.

I knit these with undyed yarn, then ombre dyed them myself. It is easy and fun.
I knitted the extension chart in these, and omitted the lace edging. I knitted a few big eyelets at the top edging, which curls a bit. The instructions are below, somewhere towards the end.

Rambling notes below.

Change of plans (yarn), I actually asked her and she chose the teeswater instead of the ColourMart rust silk, to be custom dyed in yellow greens and emeralds!

2 jan: waiting for my new metal needles to arrive, and ordered acid dye, too.

11 jan: doesn’t seem like the metal needles will ever get here :( ok, I started swatching with my bamboo dpns. I am getting close to gauge (28 sts x 10 cm) with small needles! 2.25 mm. I swatched in the train, then washed it at work :P and now it is drying over my computer ;P the yarn seems to have softened with the wash, it feels less hairy.

13 jan: mhmh, ok this yarn is very, very diffeent from the yarn with which I knit the sample. It looks more delicate and quite rustic at the same time.

The yarn is kind of ropey, like perlé cotton. Very twisted and not at all elastic. The long hairs are sort of glossy. Such an experience knitting with this wool! It does have memory like wool, but no elasticity of the strand. It feels very different to the touch.
I am glad I didn’t wait for the metal needles, because even the bamboo ones tend to slip out. I drop stitches now and then, and normally I don’t.

So the little hairs sticking out, because this yarn is like fine hair, more than wool, are a bit itchy. I hope it will soften. I am itch-resistant but I think most people not so much… so hoping wash+conditioner will soften it.

I have taken some DREADFUL phone pictures.

Later: I made a dye test. With SEWO color. Yellow and a little of green. LOVE it, exactly what I wanted. Dyeing is so much fun… danger!

I put a little of dye and vinegar in warm water, then the swatch, and then nuked it for 30 sec.

14 jan:
Finished one mitten. After the extension chart (I think it needs some modification in the pattern!), I knit two rows, then ssk, k2tog, triple YO to end. Next row I BO: 3 knitwise, 1 purlwise to end.
Btw, I had 44 sts for the top of the mitt, 40 for YOs and BO, otherwise it would be necessary to change to smaller needles, probably from the extension chart on.

It looks curly now, but I will see if I can block it in little points. Curly looks nice too.

Thumb: k3 rows, change to 2mm needles, k3 rows, p, k, BO purlwise.

23 jan:
Finished second mitten and dyed them! I took a couple of pictures before dyeing, but it is not daylight…
I dyed with yellow and blue SEWO color. I dunked the whole mittens in a bath of yellow green, nuked them in the dye, dipped the cuffs in a bath that was bluer, massaged a bit, nuked some more only the mittens on a dish, then dipped the tips of the cuffs in an ever bluer bath, massaged, nuked them a few times on a dish. Washed and conditioned, blocked :P

I had a lot of dye left over, so I dyed a ball of white angora yarn as well.
