Working my way through Chart 1.

Started over at least six times as I kept losing yarn-overs near the beginning and end of my rows and frogging was easier than trying to muddle through how to drop down and fix brioche (yes, yes, it can be done…but ugh, who likes doing it?)

Went down two needles sizes for this project as my last brioche shawl (Stephen West’s Shawlography) used the same needle size and the resulting stitch tension was pretty loose. Not sure I want my brioche to be any more thinner than that.

Will vigorously block the final project to make up the for needle size.

GAUGE

  • 20 st/4 inch in stockinette

CHART 1 NOTES

  • Be careful when working WS rows with Color B. The “slip purlwsie wyif” made with Color A is followed by a sl1yo and that tension always pulled my yarn from the slip purlwise over the top of my needle similiar to a german short row wrap. So instead of three stitches for the i-cord edging, I had four stitches due to the yo being pulled tight. When I went to slip the three stitches on the next row with Color B, I had to reach around the back of the needle and pull the yo over to its proper orientation.

YARDAGE FOR CHART 1

  • Yarn A: ?? (forgot to measure)
  • Yarn B: used 4g

YARN

The Jawoll Twin is light fingering and not very fluffy. I am having tension issues with the brioche stitches being very loose and sloppy. The yarn is also very splitty and the plies want to separate when you so much as stare at them.

The Stroll is absolutely lovely and creating plump stitches. Gorgeous color as well.

After washing, the stroll bleeds horribly and has stained the white / light blue Jawoll.

CHART 2 NOTES

  • Provided stitch counts include the increases as if they were already knit. Or, another way to think of it is to count the purl row stitches following the row. (Eg, Row 1 stitch count counts the OO as two increases even tho you haven’t knit them yet).

YARDAGE FOR CHART 2

  • Yarn A used: 21 g used

CHAPTER 3 NOTES

  • Yarn A used: 11 grams used
  • Yarn B used: 9 grams used

CHART 4 NOTES

  • I found that the kfbfbf in Row 1 resulted in an increase that leaned to the left and misaligned the central kbtl stitch. I substituted the increase with a “kyokyok” instead.

THIS HAS BEEN CORRECTED IN THE FINAL VERSION

YARDAGE FOR CHART 4

  • Yarn A: 23g used

CHART 5 NOTES

  • slip - RS (slip wyib) and WS (slip wyif)

Switched to US 5 needles since I think I will be short on length

08-06-2022

Spilled coffee all over my shawl so had to take a day to transfer stitches to a needle holder and wash it.

Yardage estimates are messed up now since I had to cut a lot of my CC yarn due to stubborn stains

FINAL MEASUREMENTS

Width (measured from top edge): 60”

Length (measured from center down to the center scallop edge): 30”

Should have knit this shawl with a US5. This is my first lace shawl so I wasn’t sure how loose the tension should be. Looking at other tester’s shawls and more photos of the original shawl, I could have definitely made this more airy.

OVERDYE

On the final wash, the demarcation of the coffee stained yarn vs the new skein of yarn was very visible, especially since the stained yarn happened in the white gradient (now a beige) and the final brioche lace section featured a lot of the lighter blue color.

I decided to overdye with orange Kool-Aid since that was the most readily available at my grocery store and didn’t require a lot of prep work.

I heated a giant pot with warm water and vinegar, five packets of orange Kool-Aid and heated it to medium. I stirred until the water turned clear and then washed and blocked the shawl again.

The contrast yarn took the dye well but near the end of the shawl it is lighter (which in turns means it’s a bit muddier). I think I didn’t turn the shawl very well in the pot so one layer of the shawl (top) got more access to the dye. I might experiment later with dip-dying, but for now this is okay.
