GAUGE SWATCHING

7/13/2022

In stockinette

  • US4 = 5.5 spi
  • US3 = 6 spi
  • US2 = 6.5 spi

Chevron

  • US3 = 2 repeats measure 3.5” across, 26 stitches.

NB: Upon blocking the finished garment and taking final measurements, I realized I forgot to make a flat gauge swatch, instead I only measured an in-the-round swatch. I struggled a lot with rowing out while knitting the front and back and ended up tediously correcting a lot of rows, stitch by stitch. This probably was unnecessary as it changed my gauge. Wether the rowing out was only in my head and would have been fixed by blocking, I am not sure. I do know its a pain in the ass to try to correct row gauge once you have knit the entire piece though.

Anyway, this has resulted in a difference of 3 stitches in the recommended gauge (25 sts per 4” vs my 28 sts). I don’t think this should matter much fit-wise as this garment is meant to be worn with 13-18” of positive ease.

Next time, I would a US4 to get this same gauge.

SIZING

Bust measurement: 34.5”

I am knitting Size 1 for 13.25” positive ease

MODIFICATIONS

From other projects here on Ravelry, it looks like this shirt is very cropped so I plan to lengthen it by:

  • adding 2 extra stripes with the contrast color in the chevron section for a total of 5 stripes. 1” length added.
  • knitting more rows before splitting for the front and back, around 35 total rows.
  • My row gauge is off. Pattern lists 7 rows per inch and I am getting 9 rows per inch. To compensate, for “BACK” > > “All Sizes” instructions I added 7 rounds of plain st st (instead of 5) for a total of 62 rows (instead of 48 rows) worked after dividing Front and Back to measure 6.8” (which is close enough to 6.75” as listed in the pattern).

BACK LEFT SHOULDER AND NECK SHAPING

These directions got pretty vague. I had to sit and think and look critically at my knitting to figure out what the pattern was trying to say.

SR8-SR10 is basically just the right shoulder with everything to the left (neck and left shoulder stitches) being unworked.

For SR9, work until the k2tog, k1 from SR7

RIBBING

Used a US2.

I bound off sleeves with a US4 and bound off neck and ribbing with a US5

FINAL MEASUREMENTS

A: 22” (measured flat)
B: 16.75” (measured flat)
C: 19.5”
D: 6.75”
E: 8”
F: 7.25”

E measures an extra 1.5” across.

  • I don’t think I mind the extra length as I had a lot of trouble binding off the neck. It was consistently too tight and I had to go up two needle sizes even when using a stretchy bindoff. As is, the neck opening is slightly smaller than I’d like, but blocking helped to relax it.
  • I ended up ignoring the instructions to skip stitches for picking up the sloped neck stitches. Instead, I picked up every stitch including a stitch in each corner where the shoulders met the neck.

FIT CHECK

  • The whole garment seems to want to ride up and not go back down. Not sure what the issue is.
  • I need to redo the bind off (for the umpteenth time!) as it is still too tight. I will use a US6.
  • I love the length.

YARN THOUGHTS

The KnitPicks Stroll Handpainted is a delight to work with. Plump twist and the colors are beautiful. I was trying to stashdive with this project, but ended up splurging on the Stroll because the colors called out to me so much.

The Cloudborn Fingering is a bit rustic and scratchy. It’s thin and possibly leans towards more of a light fingering weight. It also doesn’t have a lot of body. It’s a great bargain yarn, but I did not have that much fun knitting with it. Color consistency between two skeins was perfect without having to alternate.
