Notes

1 week sweater notes!

  • Knit in worsted weight vs Bulky (rav lists Tuffy as Aran weight but it knits as worsted)
  • Add pockets to the fronts (9” tot op of sleeve from hem)
  • Lengthen sleeves (20” from cuff to UA)
  • Calculate circumference of armsycle to make sure the sleeve cap is adjusted to fit . Good notes Here on this!
  • Cast on for 52.25” for FO 43”, which will be about 8” ease
  • On row 27 of chart, reverse the cable so that every other cross switches
  • Worked the back panel 1st so I could memorize the cable pattern and so that I could make sure my gauge calculations were correct
  • Yarn notes: super affordable option for a large sweater, each skein was only around $7 with free shipping, so around $70 for the whole sweater! Yarn smells sheepy and has a very rustic feel. Before knitting I soaked each skein in wool wash and then dried them. This softened up the yarn substantially and left a clean smell. After blocking the yarn bloomed even more and is really nice. Yarn is sturdy and didnt break throughout, even during seaming. Highly recommend this yarn, I would use it again!

Pockets

  • I knew I wanted to add pockets but I wanted free floating pockets. I knew I wanted to add ribbing to the top of the pockets and I wanted to minimize the amount of sewing/bulk to the pocket so this is what I did:
  • Knit front panel as instructed until the point where I wanted the top of the pocket to be (approx 9” up) Measured how wide I wanted the pocket, work 12 stitches from UA edge then worked the pocket ribbing until 11 stitches from front edge by knitting into the front and back. So I worked 12st, then worked the next 38st front and back (resulting in 76st), work to end
  • Turn work and work ws as per pattern, when I reached the ribbing stitches, move every stitches previously worked in the back on to waste yarn, bringing the stitch count back to normal
  • Worked the length of the ribbing back and forth, when I reached the height I wanted I knit 12 stitches, bound off ribbed stitches and worked to the end of the row. Place stitches on waste yarn or extra needle
  • When working the liner remember that st-st will be wider than the cabled/rib section so reduce stitch count by 4, add stitches back in the last row before resuming pattern
  • Go back to held ribbing stitches and place on #7 needle, work 1r purl, decreasing 4st = 34st. Work st-st until the desired depth of the pocket (27r) then k1r to turn pocket lining. Resume st-st until the sides of the liner are equal. 26r, increase by 4st next row. After adding in reduced stitches, resume working the cable pattern to the same row the ribbing ended
  • Place held stitch back on needle. Work WS per pattern, picking up the sleeve liner stitches
  • Resume working front, return to lining later to seam sides
  • Work even row 1-32 x 3, 1-6
  • For Left front; R7 bo 8 = 53st
  • R9 bo 4 = 49st
  • R11 bo 3 = 46st
  • R13 bo 2 + neck Dec = 43st
  • R15/17/19/21/23 bo 1 + neck dec = 41/39/37/35/33 st

  • R7/11/15/19/23/27 neck dec = 26/25/24/23/22/21 st
  • Work even to r30, work to last 5, gsr
  • Repeat r32
  • R2 work 5 then gsr
  • Work 1r even to knit dbl stitches. Place stitches on hold for 3 needle bo with back st
  • For Right front; R8 bo 8 = 53 st
  • R10 bo 4 = 49 st
  • R12 bo 3 = 46 st
  • R13 neck dec = 45 st
  • R14 bo 2 = 43 st
  • R15 neck dec = 42st
  • R16 bo 1 = 41 st
  • R17 neck dec = 40 st

  • R7/11/15/19/23/27 neck dec = 26/25/24/23/22/21 st
  • Work to r28 then work short rows. Put last 21st on waste yarn

Back Panel

  • After tubular cast on work 12r ribbing

  • Work to r29 even end Rs
  • R30-R1 work to last 5, gsr
  • R2 work to end picking up dbl st
  • R3 move 1st 21st to waste yarn, bo center 44 st, work last 21 st then move to waste yarn

Sleeves

  • Tubular cast on #5, ribbing #6
  • Work R1-12 even
  • Increase every 6r x 15 then every 2r x 6

  • R21/22 bo 4 = 30/26 st
  • R23/24 bo 5 = 21/16 st
  • R25 bo remaining st

Collar

  • Block all pieces to measurements, 3 needle bind off to seam shoulders
  • Seam sleeve caps, then sleeves and sides
  • #6 pick up 1st from garter edge: 92 st from edge to 1st neck dec, 40 st to shoulder seam, 44 back neck, 40 to 1st neck dec, 92 to edge = 308 st
  • Add 2 rows before button holes and 2 full rows after 2nd round of short rows
  • 5 buttons using 4st 1r button holes, using this method
  • 2r set up (move stitches to 1x1 rib) and tubular bind off
