The second sock in the UK Sock Knitters 2019 Challenge.

There are 18 groups in the periodic table and this year I will be knitting a sock to represent an element from each of them. Click the link above to follow my progress on the whole project in one notebook post !

The January/February Sock Represents Vanadium (V)

Vanadium was named after the goddess of beauty and fertility - Vanadis (AKA Freyja) because of the many beautifully colored chemical compounds it produces.

When oxidised Vanadium has four distinct colours - yellow, green, blue and purple. The yarn represents the silver transition metal and its four oxidized states.

I shared my inspiration picture (bottom) with Georgina - The Fibre Fox who knocked it out of the park with the custom dyed “Freyja” colourway.

As Vanadis is the goddess of beauty I wanted to create a feminine yet powerful design. This sock features an all over lace and mock cable pattern that flows through the toe and short row heel. The lace and cables form a “V” motif that is repeated over the sock.
