Instead of making one short and one extra-long edge strip, on the first edge I cast on 10 stitches, then the live loop of the old color, then picked up the side stitches as dictated in the pattern.
When I wrap around to the final strip for that level, on the edge I put the needle through the first stitch knit-wise on the color I’m working on, then flip the work over and poke the needle through the edge of the first color from the front. I next wrap the working yarn around it like a knit stitch, and bring that yarn through both parts the needle is through. Pull that stitch and the next knitted stitch tightly to make it look nice.
The fourth strip will also be one less row (9.5 ridges) so that the end loop is on the right rather than the left. This way it’s on the very corner, making it easy to start the next layer out. This does not apply to the final black border.
I also made the outside border 20 ridges (40 rows), with the inside still being 10.
--- Log ---
9/8/12 - The blanket is officially complete! Can’t believe it’s actually done - it feels so heavy and warm.
9/5/12 - Last border is done! That’s it for the knitting portion, just have to stitch them together and block them a final time.
9/3/12 - Second-to-last border done! Sooo close - just hope I have enough yarn after to stitch the squares together.
8/28/12 - Up to the fourth-to-last square border, starting to see the light at the end of the knitted tunnel.
8/19/10 - Did the outside borders on the bottom three squares. The thick sides take forrrrever to do, but it should be worth it.
8/9/12 - Finished blocking the squares that weren’t done yet. Also updated the yarn totals as off B12.
8/6/12 - Block 12 done! Started on the borders now. I decided to double the width of the outside ones, making them 20 ridges wide - this is gonna take a while.
8/1/12 - Block 11 done!
7/28/12 - Block 10 done! Procrastinating blocking this one out too. Maybe I’ll do the last four together. Yarn totals updated up to B10.
7/19/12 - Block 9 done! Ends are woven in, but haven’t blocked it out yet. Probably will with B10.
7/18/12 - Updated yarn totals for B8. Almost done with 9.
7/14/12 - Block 8 done! Also added the total amount of yarn so far (as of updating, B8 hasn’t been added).
7/11/12 - Block 7 done! In the middle of the brown I switched to my new Addi needles, and holy crap are they nice. I just have to get used to how slick they are (I’ve dropped a few stitches with them).
7/9/12 - Paused the knitting to weave in the ends for the first six squares. It’s surprisingly fun!
7/5/12 - Block 6 done!
7/3/12 - Block 5 done!
7/1/12 - Block 4 done!
6/28/12 - Block 3 done! Feels like I should get a couple more colors, the blue and greys seem too close to each other.
6/26/12 - Finished Block 2. While I seem to be picking up knitting speed, I think I’ll have to learn how to flick or knit continental to see significant improvement.
6/23/12 - Finished Block 1 today. My modification to the strip layout seems to work, or at least doesn’t look horrible. Next up: Figure out how to block it out to lay flat, and start Block 2!
6/21/12 - Despite never knitting a real project before, I’m attempting to modify this pattern by adding 10 rows’ width to the first strip so that the border squares are all the same. We’ll see how it goes.
