After 3 starts, I think I need to amend the pattern (again).
- I suspect I will want to add a st st row or two before the cable and lace panel starts.
- I suspect that like others I may want that panel a bit further from the thumb
I have found several things difficult to interpret from the book, which may simply be because I have only been knitting for 3 months:
- I had not previously seen a stitch count summary sentence, eg. “51 (55, 59) sts.” so I thought it was an instruction to knit that many stitches!
- This is the first time I am trying to work from a pattern which includes a chart and I am puzzled. I thought at first it would include what is knitted between markers. But this one cannot be, from how I read the transitions from row 9 to 10, 12 to 13, 21 to 22 and 22 to 23. I guess 10 starts 3 stitches before the 9, 13 starts 2 stitches earlier again ; 22 starts 2 stitches after 21 and 23 starts 3 after 22. I am currently trying to graph it out in a spreadsheet.

Yup. The expert who comes to #Yak&Yarn @ Plaza library Hoppers Crossing confirmed my reading of the chart. My spreadsheet let me chart out the whole pattern, as written, then determine where knit stitches should be shifted to be done between the markers rather than before or after.
Knitting the largest, I will knit 35 before markering, and 5 more before starting the book’s chart.
I did want to stockinette rows before the cable and lace; but I would have to continue adjusting the spreadsheet to be sure how that would work; and I want to get my hands back on the wool so will leave further changes for now.

If my spreadsheet correctly captures the instructions for the large the thumb gusset will be slipped on to waste yarn at the end of Row 32.
Checking it all again, I am reminded of my other problem with this pattern: the thumb gusset starts at end of round. So the instruction for Inc Rnd doesn’t make sense because its last instruction after increasing inside gusset markers is to “work in patt to end of rnd.” But the round had ended at start of gusset!
Same problem with instructions Hand!

Finally content enough with my Chart fingerless mitts Dalkey Googlesheet guessing what might have been meant here and there, good to go.
So… , 6 rounds after miss-cabling (holding in front instead of behind), I learn how to recognise whether a decrease was ssk or k2tog, and how to tink the ssk.

Great, all done by 2am, though I did not check how to make that bind off neat in the round before cutting the thread.
It was too large. Now I see why people check the gauge!
This one will stay unfinished until I run out of other projects, and either find someone with a hand that large, or a reason to go to the bother of frogging it to go smaller.
