After seeing a similar hat on Instagram I checked into buying the pattern and decided to make this one on my own. The original pattern didn’t include detailed sizing or gauge information and the designer didn’t respond to requests for this information.
The Landscapes yarn was held double. Encore chunky was just one strand.
I will add my gauge information shortly. Here is my recipe
Knit brim in 1x1 ribbing. I cast on 52 stitches on size 13 needles (use same size throughout). I used long tail cast on and held 2 needles together to ensure a stretchy enough edge. Then I knit 8 rows of the ribbing. Because the star stitch pattern is not particularly stretchy I had to add stitches. I did a row of all knit stitches, but every 6 stitches I did a K1F&B (knit one front and back) to bring my stitch total to 60 (need multiple of 4). Knit one more plain round. Then do the star stitch round. Use your contrast/rainbow yarn for these rounds. Do not cut your main color.
Star stitch is to knit 3 stitches together but not just a single knit stitch. You knit 1, yarn over, and knit another one all in the K3Tog before sliding to the right hand needle. It’s like doing a crochet style stitch in knitting! You will then slip the next stitch without knitting. Make sure that you don’t pull your floated rainbow yarn tight here. Repeat star stitch, slip stitch around to end of round.
Using main color again knit the next round like this. Knit into the first stitch of the star stitch, knit into the back loop of the middle of the star stitch, and knit the 3rd stitch of the star stitch. When knitting the slipped stitch I lifted the floated rainbow yarn up onto the left needle and knit it together with the slipped stitch. Kept the inside of the hat tidy. Repeat this around.
Next round knit all stitches.
You will repeat these 3 rounds (star, follow up, plain knit) until your hat is the desired height. Be sure to offset your star stitches so they don’t line up exactly. You want the next star stitch round to be centered between the previous round. This basically means you sometimes slip some stitches back to the left needle in order to start the star stitch overlapping the beginning of the round and other times slip the first couple of stitches on the left needle. I really just figured it out as I went. The beginning of the round shifts as you don’t want to have a jog in the pattern.
While working up the hat I just carried the main color yarn/rainbow yarn without cutting. However, I cut apart my rainbow yarn to only use the color sections I wanted. So I do have a fair amount of ends to weave in.
The crown is begun after completing all 3 rounds of the pattern. I worked it like this round 1 K 8, K2tog, Rnd2 K4, K2tog; rnd3 knit; rnd4 k3, K2tog; rnd5 knit; rnd6 K2, k2tog; rnd7 K1, k2tog, (at this point there’s 18 stitches). Cut a long tail and thread through stitches on needle. Slide off needle and pull tight.
Pompon is a 6” faux fur one found on Amazon. Might change the color.

Ribbing gauge 10 sts in 4”. Brim measures exactly 2 inches and includes cast on round and 8 rounds of ribbing on size 13 needles. Hat brim measures 10” across and fits my 21.5” circumference head without squeezing hard.

Star stitch gauge horizontal is 3 pattern repeats (star and slip stitch) is 4”. Gauge vertically is 3 pattern repeats (star, follow up, knit plain) is 2”.
To fit the hat measure your head. My fit is 1.5 inches of negative ease for the ribbing. I then added stitches (keeping multiples of 4) to make the gauge for the body of the hat also fit.
For a non slouchy fit on my head I knit 6.5 inches from edge of brim to first decrease round. Total height is 8 inches. There are 6 repeats of the star stitch pattern. For a slouchy fit or a hat where you want to turn the brim up add 1-3 more repeats of the star stitch pattern before the crown decreases. I did that at first and ripped it out. The weight of the Pom Pom wasn’t comfortable on a slouchy hat for me.
