My sister saw the Cincinnati Reds dog sweater I made for Mia, and she decided I needed to make her a Chicago Bears sweater for her dog Leo.
I have adjusted this pattern slightly because Leo is a boy and needed extra room on the underneath of the sweater to accommodate his boy parts (and possible wetness).
I cast on 44 stitches for the top/back section and 16 stitches for the underneath section. The original pattern calls for switching the needles to 8’s after the ribbing is done, but I decided to keep with the 6’s because Leo is such a small dog, and because I was “caping” it instead of making it a sweater in the round like the original pattern.
To cape the back, I made the back length 8” (including ribbing), and for the underneath section, I made it 5” (including ribbing).
I did an experiment to see if I could add some extra length to the corners of the underneath section so that the edges would curve to meet a longer portion of the top section.
For the first 3 stitches of each orange ribbing row (and the previous 4 rows of the blue) where it sits at the bottom of the chest, I knit the first three stitches, turned it around, knit three stitches back, and then turned the knitting around again and finished the row like normal. It wasn’t as effective as I thought it would be to add length to the corners and make a pretty curve, but hopefully it will be effective in keeping the sweater dry when Leo goes potty.
