Knit with dye lot 62046.
Body but with no neckband and no sleeves yet: consumed 260 g of yarn.
Finished sweater but with no fringe yet: consumed 391 g of yarn total.
Completed sweater consumed 480g of yarn, though some of the weight was trimmed off as discard while making the fringe.
For the fringe: I used two 6” pieces of yarn per tassel. Yes, it uses more than necessary but then there is plenty available to manipulate and plenty to trim down nicely at the end.
I found that inserting my crochet hook from the bottom to top worked best - I included photos for reference. I recommend you try it both ways though and see which you like better (it seems some may prefer how the yarn lays the other way).
After the fringe was applied, I used a darning needle to pick apart the yarn’s plies and scissors to trim it to the correct shape. Then I purchased a standard hair comb from a beauty supply store (new means it is definitely clean and grease-free) and used it to comb out the fringe further. I attempted steam-blocking the fringe but found it really needed wet-blocked, at least prior to the first wear. I suspect steam blocking would be fine for touch-ups.
I rated this pattern as “difficult” for the following reasons:
The yarn is discontinued so it might be difficult to source, and I am not convinced that a substitute would be ideal due to the nature of the fringe (swatch first!!!),
The lace is double-sided which would probably be challenging for someone who has only ever knit single-sided lace,
Multiple charts are required per row making the pattern harder to read for someone not used to this,
Seaming is necessary, which isn’t really hard but is an aspect that isn’t my personal favorite,
Bobbles, which aren’t really difficult but do slow things down,
Fringe, see above under “bobbles”, not so difficult to apply but difficult to manage as a FO,
Blocking is a must; the unique elements of this project do mean that you need knowledge/tools to execute this necessary step.
Basically, although a lot of the individual elements aren’t difficult themselves, combined it does make for something a bit more challenging, definitely a process. However, I found the experience immensely enjoyable and would recommend it to someone who isn’t on a deadline and is feeling adventurous. The results definitely were worth the effort.
This sweater is so unique that even knitters look at it and assume it was storebought lol
