I’ve come into possession of a huge quantity of Harris Tweed ‘bobban’ wool: 6 cones of it. It’s kind of scratchy but my memories of cosy bobban socks made me think it might be suitable for an outer garment. The wool is a luscious dark green, and 6 plies wound together make something between Aran and chunky, so another Sylvi is on the cards.
Going to try to freeform some cabled vines/leaves up the sleeves, roughly based on Steve Vai’s ‘tree of life’ fretboard.
It took me 3 days to wind most of the wool into balls (not by hand thank goodness) so starting this on Easter Monday.
Had to change needles halfway up the sleeves as my gauge had changed, probably due to an arthritis flare. Just free-formed some cabled vines, knitting both sleeves at the same time so they matched. Added some more at the bottom fronts, using the hood design. Used the big petals on the bottom fronts so they curled round and over the seams, which I mattress stitched as I didn’t want the ridges.
Washed in the machine at 30 degrees, which softened the wool and felted it very lightly.
Lined with some Liberty Tana Lawn fabric bought at half price in Abakhan, and added some lovely leaf buttons with some chain stitched loops to fasten.
