Once I compared the written pattern and the tutorial, I quickly got the hang of it. It only would have taken about three days to make if I hadn’t hybernated it in favor of other projects. I opted to add my own edgings. It’s a double-thickness edging with the colors matching the side they’re on. The blanket is nice and thick and very warm. I am adding it to my do-again patterns.
Edited 3/29/14:
I’ve had requests on Crochetville and one here for directions to make the edging. Here you are :)
Side 1:
-
Using the same yarn I used in the last row of the blanket and without fastening it off, first I sc’d all around the sides. I made 3 sc’s in the corners. Then I fastened off.
-
Next you are going to start the double thickness edging. Using my colors, on the side that the fans are turquoise, and working front loops only, I attached the turquoise yarn to a corner, made 3 sc’s, and then: (ch 1, sk 1 stitch, sc) to end of side, ch 1, sk 1 stitch, 3 sc’s in the next corner. I did the same on all sides. Now, you may have to fudge a little because the count may not be exact so that you end with a chain 1 before the 3 sc’s in the corner. Just either sc2tog to get rid of an extra stitch or fudge it so that it ends up like that. You’re joining at the end of every round, of course. Fasten off.
-
Round 3: On both loops from now on, same as Round 2 but with the dark brown yarn.
-
Round 4: With turquoise, sc in each stitch and ch-1 space from previous round, with 3 sc’s on the corners. Fasten off.
-
Round 5: With dark brown, reverse single crochet all around (crab stitch). Fasten off.
Side 2:
The same as Side 1, Rounds 2-5, but instead of starting with turquoise, start with dark brown. You’re reversing the colors here. Round 5 should be in turquoise.
Finishing off:
Now that you have two layers of edging, it’s time to join them. First insert your hook into any stitch of Round 4, through both layers, making sure that they’re the matching stitches so that your edge doesn’t end up scrunched up and unaligned. It’s easier to start with the middle of the 3 corner sc’s. Then pull up a loop of either turquoise or dark brown. You choose. Now you’re going to slip stitch into every stitch of Round 4 all around. Fasten off. You can join both sides by doing a running stitch or whichever way you want, but I think slip stitching is the easiest.
I hope I’ve explained the edging well enough to be understood :)
Have fun!
