I love this pattern! Since Arlo outgrew his Toddler Sophisticate, I decided to make a bigger version, size 3T. It turned out a little big for him (edited 11/2014: it fits him at 4 1/2 years old), but he tells me he’s not going to wear it anyway. The yarn is pretty itchy--can’t blame him.
This is a DK-weight yarn. My gauge with size 7 needles is 4.5 sts/in. I used size 7 needles for the body and size 5 needles for the ribbing.
Modifications to the pattern (these are based on my first version of this sweater):
Notes on the body:
Cast on 54 sts. Row 1: sl1, k4, pm, k10, pm, k24, pm, k10, pm, k5.
Repeated rows 2 and 13 eight times more (instead of 3(4) times more), to a yoke height of 5 inches (no additional st st before dividing the stitches). I cast on 2 sts under each arm when moving the sleeve sts to holders.
I worked until the sweater was 8 inches from the underarm. Ended with 9 rows of 1x1 ribbing.
Notes on the sleeves:
Pick up 3 extra sts at the armhole, giving a total of 41 sts. Knit straight for 8”, decrease one ssk at the beginning of the row and one k2tog 4 sts before the end of the row. Knit 4 more rows, then do another set of ssk/k2tog decreases (37 sts total). Knit until the sleeve is 10” long. Finish with 9 rows of 1x1 rib.
Notes on the collar:
Pick up stitches along the edges and neck as directed in the pattern (I had 139 sts), and knit in 1x1 rib for 4 rows. Do wrap/turns starting 34 sts from the bottom, and wrap 5 times on each side, instead of 4. For the button holes, knit to 30 sts from the bottom, then (k2tog, yo, k4 in rib pattern) five times.
Looking at the finished sweater, I think it would benefit from a slightly bigger collar.
Finishing
Buttons are 7/8-inch from Etsy seller denuartigekat. They’re a tight fit (3/4-inch buttons are better for these button holes) but they were too cute to pass up. I was originally going to use leather buttons like I did on my Toddler Sophisticate, but since my truck-loving 3-year-old decided he didn’t like this sweater when I was halfway through knitting it, the vehicle buttons were my last-ditch effort to get him to wear it.
