Now that I have been knitting for a few years, on Mother’s Day this year I got requests. Debi (my Mother-In-Law) requested a purple ruffled scarf. She originally wanted me to use novelty yarn but after the debacle of knitting my Mom’s ruffled scarf I thought otherwise. I went on a search for a pattern and found this one, Barb’s Koigu Ruffles at my local yarn shop, Shall We Knit.
I absolutely adore Koigu yarn so any excuse to use it is good enough for me. I find it to be a bit on the pricey side, the 2 skeins needed to make the scarf were over $30 but Mom’s are worth it, right? I also love how this particular Koigu had a variation of colour and wasn’t just straight up purple. It is also sock / fingering weight so the scarf would be light enough to wear all year round.
In terms of the pattern I found it very easy to knit. The scarf is knit end to end so you do need to cast on over 600 stitches, I highly recommend a stitch marker after every 50 so you can keep track.
The only other issue that I ran into was during the increases. The pattern calls for a kfb. I generally only use this increase with a garter garment but wanted to trust the pattern so I went ahead and knit a few rows using it (adding a life line first, just incase). I found that it gave the fabric small holes which I didn’t like the look of at all. I ended up ripping it back and using a m1L with greater success.
All in all it only took a few days (I think it ended up to be 4) to knit up despite the 600+ stitches needed to be co and bo. I would recommend the pattern as the end result was quite nice. Debi loved it.
Notes on the knitting:
I used Addi Click US 4 - 3.5 mm and US 6 - 4.0 mm needles with Koigu KPPPM in P202L150 . I did not gage for this project. I used 1.55 skeins = 271.3 yards (248.0m). I knit as per the pattern except for the increase modification listed above.
Blogged about the scarf here.
