After just finishing the St. Germain Hat designed by Thea Colman from BabyCocktails Knitting Designs, I thought to myself, “This hat knitting is not hard at all!” I’ve been knitting for a long time but really only stayed within my crochet boundaries when it came to hat making. Actually, the St. Germain pattern was the first hat I knitted by hand.
Thea’s hat inspired and motivated me to try out designing my own hat (hence the name “The Thea Hat”), and so I used the spiraling rib stitch pattern I spotted in the Step Ribbed Stole found in Clara Parkes’ Book of Yarn.
The hat starts out with 1x1 rib that the 3x3 diagonal rib starts directly thereafter. The rib travels for 6-6.5 inches and then the evenly spaced decreases (k2tog is used), start. Most of the knitting is done on short circulars but dpn’s are used near the top.
The hat is really stretchy, lightweight, and cozy because it is made with wool. I do wish, however, that I made the hat a little bit longer. Like .5 or 1”. I’ll take that into consideration next time!
I’m thinking of typing up this pattern and forming a how-to video for this beanie-style hat. Message me here on ravelry and let me know if you would want this to happen!
