The UK Freeformers April challenge is to make a hat.

The hat is now finished. I added a plastic hat brim wire and it made a world of difference to the finished look. I was going to hang this hat on the wall as a decorative piece rather than wearing it because although it was a good fit, it looks dreadful with my glasses!

I wanted to use my wooden hat block to help create the shape of the crown. This proved difficult because the crocheted fabric kept slipping off and I didn’t want to put pins in the block to hold it in place. Then I spotted my husband’s panama but he was not too keen on having pins stuck into it!!!
I sketched round the panama and used interfacing to make a pattern. This was cut out in old sheeting, stitched and filled with wadding to make a soft hat block. This was a much better option because the crocheted fabric could be pinned into place to create the correct shape.
