I decided during our vacation to surprise Melissa by teaching her to knit. Once she got the hang of casting on and such, I figured I could teach myself to do entrelac at the same time.

I modified the pattern to add another section of squares/ rectangles, and knitted until it fit around my neck comfortably. I seamed the cast on and cast off edges to make it a cowl.
