It’s a collegiate sweater! I go to the Columbus College of Art & Design, whose colors are red and white/grey. But this kind of classic jumper is antithetical to the school’s silly, trendy image. That makes it more fun.
I knit this worsted-weight wool with size 8 needles, which felt really loose. I am glad I persisted with such large needles, though, because the finished knit fabric is thin and flexible, like I hoped it would be. I knit the body up to the armscyes in the round on size 8 dpns, and made the arms the same way. The scyes are seamed with mattress stitch.
This was my first conscious attempt at a boat neck. In hindsight, I should have made the neck opening a lot wider than it is. Live and learn!
I originally planned to pick up the neckline and make a 2x2 rib, but after I tried it and saw how bad it looked, I opted for this stockinette neckline treatment. It is rolled over and basted down on the inside.
I drew out these block letters, cut them out of red wool felt, and sewed them onto the chest with a tailoring backstitch. It was harder than it looks to line up the letters, but I’m mostly happy with the final product.
I tried to keep specific track of my progress, just for fun:
- 22 jul: begin knitting body in round on size 6 dpns.
- 25 jul: I’ve knit about 2/3 of the way to armscye in the round.
- 26 jul: starting over after properly measuring, gauge was wrong!
- 31 jul: reached bottoms of armscyes; divided and now working back piece straight. I’ve now knit approx. 7” of back above scye.
- 3 aug: had to remake the scye part a few times because the gauge is so huge on this project that it’s hard to work with! I’ve finished off the front piece completely and am on the back now, halfway between scye and shoulder.
- 4 aug: finished back neckline and three-needle-bound-off the shoudler seams then changed my mind about the shaping. Now I’m almost done with back neckline no. 2.
- 6 aug: finished back, grafted shoulder seams, made neckband. Beginning sleeve at cuff.
- 11 aug: nearly finished with sleeve no. 1; starting on sleeve no. 2; will figure out cap shaping later
- 13 aug: finished with both sleeves! blocking now.
- 14 aug: finished blocking, seamed scyes together, appliquéd felt letters to chest.
- 15 aug: sewed elastic thread into ribbing; done!
