This is my second multi-color fair isle jumper. The construction is essentially the same as my first fair isle jumper, with steeked armscyes and neck and dropped shoulders. The colorwork design is my own, albeit heavily inspired by lots of stuff already out there. I planned all the design in Photoshop before I did any knitting. I knew I didn’t want to have any repeated patterns, and I didn’t plan enough, so the top motif (the brownish-orange snowflake) was invented at the last minute. After all that, I think it looks pretty good!
The neck opening was a real bugaboo. I originally had it much too wide (i.e, I did too many decreases around the neck opening), so I tore out the top part and re-did it. Similarly, I didn’t plan the sleeve shaping very well, and had to re-do about five inches of sleeve once I realized my original shaping was too skinny. It all worked out, though! I’d much rather plunge ahead and test things out than agonize over shaping and fit in the abstract.
Making slow but sure progress:
12 jun: finished torso, cut open steeks
14 jun: finished neckline ribbing. Onto the sleeves…
15 jul: decided the neck opening was too big. Cutting my losses (literally). Performing major surgery.
25 nov: picked up this project over Thanksgiving break, after a few months away from it. Finished the first sleeve.
27 dec: finished second sleeve.
28 dec: finished new neckline, DONE!
