Notes

The GPY sock club is back knitting a claire sock. I was hoping to have a sock where I could use this particularly intense fuschia yarn.

Journal

2016-02-01: Cast on 64 stitches - US 1.5 (2.5mm) needles, GTCO. The pattern calls for 1x1 rib. My 1x1 rib looks sloppy and normally I would use K1tbl, P1 ribbing. Looking at the pattern, I decided traditional twisted rib wouldn’t work well in this sock, so I’m doing the more fidldly K1, P1tbl so that the K1 stitch column will look clean.

Complete first cuff (14 rounds). Start second cuff.

2015-02-15: Complete second cuff.

Ack! I realized my second cuff was on a US 1. I’ve worked through about 12 rounds of the leg. I tried it on and it fits. So, I’m going to have to rip out the original cuff I did on a US 1.5 and reknit it on a US 1 (2.25mm).

2016-02-17: Complete second cuff, again. Move back to first sock leg.

2016-02-26: Complete first leg. after trying on the leg I decided to stop the leg with round 16 instead of with round 22. I think I can make up these rounds by extending the pattern into my toe. We’ll see.

2016-03-01: Complete Heel flap & turn, first sock.

2016-03-02: Complete sock 1 gusset.

2016-03-18: complete second sock leg.

2016-03-22: Complete second sock heel flap, turn & gusset.

2016-03-24: Complete second sock. Weave in ends and block.

Summary

 • I am using US 1 needles.

 • There is an error on Row 1 of the heel flap. It should read “S1, P30” because you are knitting across 31 stitches total; one stitch is not knitted - it is moved to the instep.

 • Heel flap: Repeat 4 row pattern 8 times then repeat rows 1 & 2 one more time. Total 34 rows; 17 slipped stitches to pick up.

 • I extended the pattern into the toe. I created a chart to follow for the area of the toe which goes beyond the pattern’s chart.

Preliminary Pattern Length Calculations

Using my basic sock recipe, I normally need the following: 11 cuff rounds, 61 leg rounds, 34 gusset rounds, 34 foot rounds and about 20 toe rounds (which I’ll ignore for now).

For this sock, I have 14 cuff rounds so that means I have 58 leg rounds available for a total of 126 pattern rounds (not including any toe stitches). The pattern repeat consists of 36 rounds so I have 126 rounds / 36 rounds for a total of 3.5 repeats. Perfect! I want to end my foot on the point -- around round 15. I’m going to continue the pattern in round 16 through the toe.

I will start the heel flap after round 22.

Next Time

 • Shift the cuff over by 1 stitch. Either start with a purl or shift one stitch over. This way, the knit column in the purls will line up with a knit in the rib.

 • Use vertical stranding on the knit stitch that runs up the middle of the purls
