Notes

This is the best thing I have ever made! Huge thanks to ChiKrneta for this amazing pattern. When I told people that I was going to crochet my wedding dress, a lot of them gave me the hairy eyeball. But I got a million compliments on my wedding day because the pattern is so beautiful and flattering. It is incredibly special to have made my own dress and I will keep it forever.

Here are the notes I made during the process:

Made a gauge swatch using a D hook and it came out to exactly the right width and a bit taller after blocking. I’m going with it.

I measure up at a large bust, medium waist and large hips. I started out making a large waist but quickly realized it was going to be wayyyyy to big! Frogged, then started the medium waist in a C hook. It still seems a bit too big but I think it would be hard to get in and out of the dress if it was much smaller. I am doing the top as a medium (D hook) so that my pineapple motifs line up nicely with the medium waist. In order to accommodate for a larger bust, I am using the wide motif included in the pattern.

Make the skirt portion as a medium as well. I tried it on as I went, and increased gauge (to E hook) at the start of my hips, then switched the the wide motif. At the widest part of my hips I was doing an “extra-wide” motif (2 extra stitches instead of 1). After the hips I went back down to wide motif and continued from there. I used the train addition for this pattern to bring it down to my toes. I only crocheted up to row 43 in the train pattern which gives a nice fit & flare shape, without the longer “train” part at the back. At this point it was about 5 inches too short but I knew that I could stretch it during blocking. I figured that adding another repeat of the pineapple would make it too long.

Blocking: I am doing the blocking in 2 parts. I have blocked the skirt portion of the dress first to make sure that I could stretch it to the right length. I got an extra five inches in length out of the blocking, which made it perfect! I will go ahead and add the trim to the skirt now.

Some afterthoughts:

  • Waist ended up fitting perfectly, even though it seemed big when I first made it.
  • The top portion seems very big until you get the trim onto it. That tightens up the fit alot.
  • The skirt did ride up a bit while I wore it, so I maybe should’ve made it just a bit longer.
  • This pattern + yarn combination seems to be very forgiving size-wise. The pattern is very stretchy and the yarn can stretch a fair bit during blocking if needed.
