Notes

CO 104 st., 2x2 rib for 4 inches, 5 pattern repeats.

Started to cable without a cable needle, but this thick-and-thin yarn is very, very thin in places and inelastic. It seemed likely to break with the stretching. Using a cable needle (actually a darning needle) avoided over-stretching. And I have done this hat so many times now that I am used to the cabling with a cable needle: it is fairly easy now.

To co-ordinate with his new red coat, to be worn hiking and glacier climbing in Iceland.

He likes a folded brim. It’s just as well, because this stiff, inelastic, tight, thick-and-thin yarn is very thin - light dk - in many places. The body of the hat is almost lace-like, compared to the thick, dense fabric made with Malabrigo Worsted or Rowan Felted Tweed Aran in the same pattern. The folded brim provides some extra warmth.
