Notes

A little roomy but should be okay for her. Good pattern, easy to follow instructions. A few reminders and tips for next time:

Thrums (make lots!! before CO to minimize work interruptions but be sure they are the right size - thickness should be similar to working yarn)

  • used 2 strands of pencil roving
  • length - wrapped once around 4 fingers (about 4 in.), then folded and twisted as per Thrum FAQ. Started with 3-inch lengths as per FAQ but that was too short and the thrums worked loose when knitting the next row.

Mittens (Finished length is 11 inches from CO)

  • CO 40

  • knit 2x2 rib for 21 rows (7.5 cm)

  • increased to 45 stitches (K8, M1), knit as per pattern for 4 thrum repeats until afterthought thumb prep.

  • total of 10 thrum patterns before decreases and 1 thrum row in decreases. N.B. Add 1 knit row after last thrum to make the last decrease row of K2tog easier.

  • alternated thrums (probably just Row A and B alternating would work well): Row A - k2, thrum repeat around Row B - k1, thrum, k1 repeat around Row C - thrum, k2 repeat around

  • thumb - 9 stitches on waste yarn, then picked up 3 for a total of 21 (to maintain 3-stitch pattern in thrum row), worked 3 thrum patterns, then decreased without thrums.

  • kitchener graft to finish

For me, CO 36 for rib and increase to 39 for body, work 9 thrum pattern repeats before decreasing, with 6 stitches on waste yarn for thumb.

For Dave, CO 40, increase to 45, work 5 thrum repeats before thumb prep. and 11 thrum repeats total before decreasing.

Started Jan. 7 but interrupted for other projects including non-knitting (altered book, temari). Easy to get distracted because of the start/stop nature of thrumming. First mitten completed Jan. 27, second mitten completed Jan. 30.
